I walked down to the library today. I nearly got hit, going both ways, crossing the street. One time I was crossing with the light, and the other time there was no light. Both times cars barreled through at high speed. These cars weren't two or three lanes away, which is bad enough; they passed within feet of me. If my reflexes were slower, I'd have been hit and quite likely killed.
