I read Speaking Dreams by Severna Park. I would give it 5 stars.

It is a tougher space opera, about two young womyn who cannot accept slavery in a society which still accepts slavery, and about their romance as well as their survival. One comes from an isolated farming and herding community ruled by the slavers. She also has prescient dreams. Another comes from a spacefaring community at odds with the slavers but which also practices slavery. After they come together, they depend on each other to heal, and to survive amid the conflict. It is rather violent, too, and scary, and challenging, but that is inherent in the subject.

I read Cognate by R.C. Brojim. I would give it 3 1/2 stars, rounding up if pressed, good but not great.

It is a treklike space opera involving first contact, piracy, and a mysterious disease, but without much romance, and also a cishetist explora command determined to put all the queers on separate ships. It put me off, at first, because I thought the author was coercively third-gendering intersex people, by default, rather than noncoercively third-gendering genderless aliens. It is rather violent too.

I read Independent Flight by K.L. Tremaine a while back. I would give it 3 stars, though I have high hopes for her upcoming works.

It is another treklike space opera, about a confrontation between a few smugglers and a few fleet personnel, but without much about what seems like an interesting setting, and without romance. And given the costs of the drug war in the here and now, I had a hard time sympathizing with the fleet personnel in the story.
